When You Need To

Read More, Better & Faster

Dear Student

As Henry David Thoreau said, “Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all.”

You can read in any way you want to. But there are few methods I find make me a better reader over the years. Here are few tips to read more, better and faster:

  • First and Foremost, remember the basic rule of thumb for reading and that is “There is no rule of thumb” for reading.
  • Do not take time out of your schedule for reading. Take some time out for your schedule out of reading time. Make reading as natural activity to do. Do not read to just put some fancy pictures on social media. Read like you breathe – to survive.
  • Want to read more? Buy more books. Buying a book is not a cost. It is an investment. If you feel that you already have books and you want to sale them back then, review your book buying strategies. Review that how you pick the book at first place. Do you read it and it is not the one to re-read, its Ok. Just give that book a place on the shelf to remind you to buy pick your books wisely next time. So many times, people said to me that they have tight budget and they cannot buy books out of that budget. Come on…! Are you taking books as a luxury? Take it like any other item you purchase every month for eating or using in your daily routine. Give your children a lesson so they can too build a habit to buy books monthly. Trust me, building a strong library is one of the best investments you can ever make.
  • To read faster, I can say that you need to read more. Accuracy first, speed second. Keep on reading and one day you will find that your speed is much faster than years ago.
  • To read more, you need to stop taking every word seriously. You need to keep the context in mind and keep on going through sentence after sentence. Those who try to digest every word or try to understand the meaning of each word leave the reading before it becomes a habit for them.
  • You need to understand that every year thousands of books get published. Add millions of books already available to it. You can never read every book on the planet. So, you have to pick books wisely. Pick books wisely. Try to get to the classics which you can read over and over again.

To read is like to breathe. It should become daily and unquestionable action for you. Try it and you will never regret the decision.
