The Start

I’ve been blessed to train thousands of people, meet hundreds of high performers and read about high performance during recent decades. One common pattern is emerging from everywhere: People are experiencing uncertainty about how to get ahead and which decisions are right for them, their families, and their careers. Despite working so hard, they are not finding the next breakthrough. Despite having the desire to go for their dreams, they find themselves in an invisible box of fear. Add to that the ambiguous job roles, self-doubt, emergencies and urgencies, financial pressures and overwhelming responsibilities -it’s enough to exhaust anyone. Too many already gave up. They lost themselves in the sea of dings and rings of distractions. They become hopeless. Few are still fighting hard. Giving themselves a dose of fresh hope everyday and showing up daily. Today, for many, drafting a plan for success has become almost impossible. Volatility, Ambiguity, Complexity, Uncertainty. Gone are the days when our work was predictable and organized. Now chaos is the only way. Our lives are no longer private affairs anymore. Make one mistake and it will be public and global. Expectations are escalating. Certainty is going down. Welcome to the new world of work.

The Question

My journey to design the training program “High-Performing Professionals” and to create this playbook starts with one simple question: Who is professional? I asked this question during my seminars and training sessions to an audience in which I have participants working at entry level and participants who are sitting at executive level with over three decades of work behind them. Most of them get shocked by this simple realization that they had never thought about this before. They claim to be professional but they never think about it thoroughly. We have clear and widely acceptable definitions when it comes to students, cricketers, musicians etc. But we don’t have a clear definition of a professional. Most organizations struggled with building happy, productive teams. It is not because they don’t have enough resources or they don’t have experienced managers. Theystruggle because they have a bunch of people from whom they are demanding “professionalism” and they all are measuring themselves against their own definition of “professionalism”. Management is angry that they are doing everything they can but these lazy and ungrateful people are not doing their best. Employees are unsatisfied and disengaged because they think they are performing at their best but still can’t get enough appreciation.
